IN AUCKLAND
Auckland
has a warm-temperate climate, with warm, humid summers
and mild, damp winters. It is the warmest
main centre of New Zealand and is also one of the
sunniest, with an average of 2060 sunshine hours
per annum The average daily maximum temperature
is 23.7 °C in February, and 14.5 °C in July,
the absolute maximum recorded temperature is 32.4 °C,
while the absolute minimum is -2.5.
High
levels of rainfall occur almost year-round with an average
of 1240 mm per year spread over 137 'rain days'.
Climatic conditions vary in different parts
of the city owing to geography such as hills, land
cover and distance from the sea, hence unofficial
temperature records exist, such as a maximum of
34°C
in west Auckland.
AUCKLAND
PLACES OF INTEREST
All Saints Church -
The second oldest Church in New Zealand was built in
November 1847 at a cost of 147 pounds, three shillings
and nine pence. It was the first building to be erected
in Howick.
Originally built to a cruciform plan, the nave was
enlarged in 1862. The Lych gate (erected in 1930) is
a memorial to those who served in the New Zealand Militias
during the Land Wars of the 1860s. The building was
pre-built in St Johns before being moved by sea, (the
easiest method of the time), to Howick where it was
finally assembled.
Many early settlers are buried in the churchyard.
Awaroa
Walkway -
Awaroa means “long river” in Maori and refers
to Tamaki Strait. This is the long stretch of sea between
Musick Point and south of Maraetai, which may look like
a long river.
Bastion
Point -
Historic Bastion Point offers visitors a range of outdoor
experiences, from expansive views of the Waitemata
Harbour and Rangitoto Island, to large open spaces
perfect for flying a kite, kicking around a ball with
friends or just lazing in the sunshine.
Devonport -
The historic seaside village of Devonport has a charming
