Interesting Facts About Brisbane

Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland, is midway up the east coast of Australia - 27.5oS, 153oE. With the Gold Coast to the south and the Sunshine Coast to the north, domestic and international airports, Brisbane is an ideal headquarters for an Australian holiday. Brisbane, indeed all Queensland, operates on Eastern Standard Time which is 10 hours ahead of GMT all year round - Summertime or Daylight Saving is not practiced in Queensland.

Driving through the beautiful Moreton Bay islands with your Camper Van / RV / Motorhome you will discover that its islands provide water sports, sailing and sea-side suburbs. The Pacific Highway leads south to the Gold Coast and its well-known surf beaches.

Visit the seaside town of Redcliffe, explore the rainforest and picturesque countryside of Pine Rivers, Caboolture and the Glasshouse Mountains with your Motorhome. Bribie Island offers the first surf beach to the north. The Sunshine Coast towns and hinterland are popular holiday spots especially with Rvers and Motorhomers

Travel through with your Motorhome or Campervan to west of Brisbane, past Ipswich, you soon climb the Great Dividing Range to Toowoomba and the rich plains of the Darling Downs.

In Australia, we drive on the left side of the road. Although there are trains, buses and ferries in Brisbane, most families own at least one car. The local currency is Australian dollars and the smallest coin in use is the 5 cent coin.

CLIMATE IN BRISBANE
Brisbane has a humid subtropical climate (Koppen climate classification Cfa) with hot, humid summers and dry, mild winters. From late Spring through to early Autumn, thunderstorms are common over Brisbane, with the more severe events accompanied by large damaging hail stones, torrential rain and destructive winds

PLACES OF INTEREST
Mount Coot-tha - is home to a popular state forest, and the Brisbane Botanic Gardens which houses the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium and the "Tsuki-yama-chisen" Japanese Garden

Brisbane Story Bridge - The Story Bridge Adventure Climb is a unique adventure experience and the most spectacular way to discover Brisbane.

Kangaroo Point Cliffs - The steep, sheer cliffs in the city centre are the place for fit climbers and abseilers to test their skills. They are beautifully lit at night too.

Treasury Building - Casino - This imposing looking building was the centre of bureaucratic and political power. It was designed by famous colonial architect JJ Clark and constructed in stages between 1885 and 1889.

Newstead House - Brisbane’s oldest surviving residence, Newstead House was built for Patrick Leslie in 1845. It had many owners and underwent transformation over the years. High on the hill, Newstead House overlooks the Brisbane River from Breakfast Creek

The Tower Mill - The Tower Mill on Wickham Terrace, Spring Hill, was built in 1828 by convicts and is Brisbane’s oldest surviving building. It originally had wind powered sails serving as a windmill and was later a treadmill operated by convicts for grinding grain. By the end of the 19th century it was used as an observatory.

Gateway Bridge - This toll bridge spanning the Brisbane River was officially opened in January 1986. It stretches for 1.63 kilometres over the river. The design had to accommodate the need for the structure to be low enough to allow planes to fly to the nearby airport, but be high enough to let large ships pass underneath. At its highest point it is 64.5 metres above the river

Sky needle - The 88 metre high sky needle was part of Brisbane’s successful World Expo 88. Stefan, a prominent local businessman, bought the sculpture and relocated it to his company’s headquarters in South Brisbane.

South Bank - South Bank will keep you happy and entertained. Situated beside the Brisbane River on the site of Expo 88, South Bank is the playground and meeting spot for everyone in Brisbane, where we gather for big events, fireworks, cultural shows and fun in all seasons. It’s a must-see spot for all visitors and the place that residents return to again and again.
